Armed with a 2H pencil, her creativity and wit, Katie uses her arsenal of skill and years of industry experience to create awesome illustrations and designs for a variety of applications.
In addition, since leaving her full-time job in September 2016, Katie has been fortunate enough to design an award-winning website.

Originally from Hertfordshire, Katie lives and works from her 32ft Narrowboat that she cruises the Grand Union Canal with her two cats; Nibbler and Rufus. As a result, this unique floating studio provides endless inspiration for new bold and colourful design projects.

My Bold and Colourful Approach to Illustration and Design
My philosophy is simple: colour is the ultimate dopamine booster. It can get you noticed and help you stand out like a flamingo in a flock of pigeons. What’s more, there is deep psychology behind colours and what they mean to us. When collaborating with me, colour will be one of our first talking points, and I will work meticulously with my colour swatches to ensure that, whether for print or web, your project shines like a disco ball.
Expertise in Illustration & Design: From University to Industry
My journey to becoming a Bold Illustrator and Designer began at the University of Hertfordshire. It was there I explored and developed my skills in illustration and design, completing a BA Hons in Graphic Design & Illustration.
Following graduation, my first job was as a Junior Graphic Designer in a small studio. In that role, I learned to implement my university training, developing my skills by producing everything from logo design and branding to large format exhibition design.
Subsequently, I moved on to take a more illustration-based job as a greetings card and gifting product designer in a studio and factory in Hertfordshire. This role showed me how to design for a commercial business. Specifically, I mastered illustrating card designs with commercial viability, as well as designing products and packaging.
As a result, I have a tonne of industry experience, giving me the skills to be able to design for a variety of products and ensure correct artwork setup for manufacturing.

Floating Illustrator And Designer Hertfordshire
Life on the Water: Inspiration from a Floating Narrowboat Studio
Since becoming freelance in 2016, I have spent the majority of my time working from my floating home, Poppy. As for Poppy, she is a work of art herself, displaying my own brand colours—purple and teal—and being an outward reflection of the Katie Ruby brand.
The canal boat is a little infamous and recognised for her colourful appearance, similarly to myself and my own work.
Living within nature has given me endless inspiration: the changing of the colours of the trees during the seasons. For example, the vivid hues of the waterfowl and kingfishers. Furthermore, this tranquility enables my creative mind to focus in a busy world with so much noise.
